What dreams may come is a paranormal/supernatural movie who's subject matter I would say is. . .
Do we exist in any way, after death? and is there such a thing as a soul mate? If you're interested in these kind of questions, this is a movie for you. This movie is based on the Richard Matheson novel of the same name from 1978 but differs a bit from the book which is well worth reading!
Robin Williams plays Dr Chris Nielsen who meets artist Annie (Annabella Sciorra) whilst on holiday in Switzerland and they just click, perfectly.
They marry and have a lovely life with two kids and everything is going along nicely when disaster strikes in the form of a car crash in which their children die. The aftermath sees Annie having a nervous breakdown and marriage problems but thankfully they manage to keep things together. A year later Chris is involved in a car crash and is killed.
The movie goes on as Annie tries to cope and follows what has happened to Chris. . . .I won't give any more away.
Sciorra and Williams give amazingly heartwarming and at the same time heartbreaking performances which anybody who has found their soulmate will be able to relate to. The depictions of heaven in this movie are brilliant and possibly one of the best for myself. The scenes were shot using Fuji Velvia film which gives very vivid colours and portrays Williams' own heaven amazingly here as well as hell resulting in a well deserved oscar for special effects.
Definitely worth watching at least once.

OK, holding hands up I am a Robin Williams fan.
Have seen this film on TV several times so got it to watch with the wife. Cried my eyes out as usual - this is to me one of his saddest and happiest films, lots of special effects and some poignant moments, plenty of dialogue and some extreme fantasy. The characters you see are not the characters you think they are or that indeed that the main actor thinks they are. All will become clear when you watch it.
Wife cried too - it just has those kind of moments.
Would recommend buying a box of tissues. This is to me one of his very best films, more involved than his comedy films and more thoughtful. His talent for acting sure comes out.

The film does not have a fantastic storyline, but do not be put off as the visual effects more than make up for the story.
A story as been made around a subject no one knows about. Death, heaven and the what may happen when we die.
Starring Robin Williams as Chris a man who had lost his two children four years previous in a car accident. Both he and his wife struggle painfully on until chris himself passes away. He is reborn in heaven, but cannot forget the love of his wife. She meanwhile is struggling unbearably and eventually takes her own life. As a result of her suicide she goes to hell.
So starts the journey of Chris to find his wife and soulmate. His journey takes him through heaven and hell and a host of characters he meets along the way who help him.
An uplifting ending.
Very worthy of a watch.

La qualità video è molto buona, anche se non eccelsa.
IL FILM:
Credo di poter dire che questo è uno dei pochissimi film capaci di unire un'eccellente produzione cinematografica a una trama ricca di spunti profondi e pervaso da una poesia dolcissima su un tema così duro come la morte.
Non voglio rovinarvi la trama, quindi cercherò di limitarmi in questa recensione.
Il film tratta di un tema tutt'altro che banale : la morte , morte trattata non come sofferenza dei vivi ma come una sofferenza congiunta tra chi è morto e chi è vivo, entrambi incapaci di accettare un'esistenza senza quella parte della propria vita che aveva completato il loro essere incompleti.
Gli eventi che aprono il film sono molto forti e tristi, ma poi il film prende una piega straordinaria, perché pur affrontando un tema delicato e spesso difficile da affrontare, lo fa non solo con grande maestria ma anche con una profondità disarmante.
Non si vede mai la morte come un punto di fine, ma come l'inizio di un nuovo viaggio.
L'intero film è pervaso da un senso di poesia che apre il cuore, dalle immagini, prima come se ci si trovasse in un dipinto fino a trovarsi in mondi fantastici ma mai banali, infatti, in ognuno di essi c'è sempre qualcosa di ciascuno e soprattutto ciò che ci ha fortemente colpiti nella vita, cioè l'amore della nostra vita, alle musiche e ai dialoghi che non accennano mai a un "arrendersi al nulla" ma mostrano una continua lotta per difendere quell'amore che non si deve lasciare andare.
Per molti versi il film è drammatico, non solo per il tema, ma proprio per come è costruito e per come fa compiere una profonda analisi del nostro io e dei nostri sentimenti, il tutto con una profondità non tipica per prodotti made in Hollywood.
Vi colpisce e non vi lascia indifferenti né insensibili, il bello è proprio affrontare un tema come la morte con uno spirito diverso, in cui proprio l'amore diventa la forza per resistere all'oblio e soprattutto per salvare il proprio amore che nella sofferenza potrebbe perdersi con facilità.
Ve lo assicuro, è un film che non solo merita di essere visto, ma merita di essere visto e rivisto, pianto e sofferto, amato e odiato, è uno di quei film non comuni che, una volta visti, vi rimangono dentro regalandovi sempre "quel qualcosa" che fi farà sorridere e apprezzare maggiormente le piccolezze della vita che spesso non sembrano niente di speciale.
A renderlo ancora più personale, oltre all'esperienza de film stesso, è il fatto che il protagonista non è un superuomo, un supereroe, non è il migliore dei mariti, nè dei padri, non è ricco nè il più intelligente, ma è semplicemente un "uomo come tanti" e proprio questo suo "essere un uomo come chiunque altro" lo rende più personale e colpisce più profondamente.
Questo è una conversazione del protagonista (interpretato da R. Williams):
"-Io mi trovo davvero qui?
- Tu? Ma chi sei tu? Ad esempio, sei il tuo braccio? La tua gamba?
- Anche.
- Davvero? Se perdessi ogni tua parte non saresti sempre tu?

- Il cervello? Il cervello è una parte del corpo come le unghie o il cuore, perché è quella la parte che ti rappresenta?

I watched this film years ago on TV and loved it so much that later on I bought the DVD to watch together with my then husband. The first time I watched this film I was actually not intending to watch it at all because I saw it advertised on TV but because of the special effects it seemed to be to be rather childish. But fate made me sit in front of the TV just when the film was starting and I watched it from start to end. The story is very inspiring, a real love story, not of princes and princesses but a love story in the real world, which shows that love does really conquer it all. Watch it and be as inspired as I was. Too bad that it didn't inspire my marriage..... . Of course Robin Williams is one of the greatest actors of our times. Too bad he had to die so early……. A real pity!
