I first saw this film on a flight back from Australia earlier this year and couldn't wait until it was released.
It is a remarkable film and the performance from the lead actor is incredible. Although distressing at times this true story is thought provoking and inspiring and in my opinion should be screened in schools to illustrate the importance of taking the cause of human rights and equality (in many arenas) forward - we should not forget what those who were involved in the Selma march gave and we should be proud to continue their journey.

Excellent film, it brought home the challenges black americans, had to, and still have face living their lives. I remember the news at that time as I was a teenager here in Scotland. Sadly there are still too many people suffering due to race, religion, and other issues that dinosaurs won't accept.
Selma reinforces that to be equal you have to fight for it, if you don't you will be looked down.

This is a very good film, well acted and on the whole well directed except that I found one section rather slow. It's about the era in USA with Lyndon B Johnson as President when although legally blacks in the Southern States were entitled to vote, in practice in some States they were prevented from registering as citizens so that they couldn't vote or perform any official position eg on a jury or local council. It is an important piece of social history about Civil Rights. I think that everyone should watch this as part of their education. The prejudice is horrific and very sad. Not a light-weight film.

Although the Civil Rights Act of 1964 legally desegregated the South, discrimination was still rampant in certain areas, making it very difficult for blacks to register to vote. In 1965, an Alabama city became the battleground in the fight for suffrage. Despite violent opposition, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo) and his followers pressed forward on an epic march from Selma to Montgomery, and their efforts culminated in President Lyndon Johnson signing the Voting Rights Act of 1965. one of the best movies I've ever seen in many respects and definitely a movie that everyone should see ... just have the man-size Kleenex at the ready :_)

Acting excellent. This film opened my eyes to past racial injustices in 1960s America and how the peaceful coming together of multi faith leaders brought about change in the law to help people access the right to vote. Sadly people white and black were murdered for trying to bring about this change. This film tells the story of what happened in a southern town called Selma in Alabama, US that became the seed bed for this change with the Christian Preacher Martin Luther King's influence.

This film delivers the extremely important message of the essential connection between citizenship and the human rights of universal suffrage, dignity and equality. It is highly recommended viewing, but I was disappointed by the delivery of the film.
The storyline lacks pace and struggles to introduce the context of the story to an audience unfamiliar with the intricacies of the civil rights movement in the USA, for which I have deducted a star. Furthermore, the film misses the opportunity to examine in greater depth the role and struggles of women in the civil rights movement at the time beyond one woman's protest experience in particular and the family impact generally faced by the wives and partners of male civil rights activists, for which I have deducted another star.
The film does, however, address the issues of personal conviction, personal cost and enduring faith in the effort of pursuing human rights for a better world which makes it resonate with the existing literature arguing in favour of the notion of Freedom.

Some times movies based on our history are hard to watch. This movie might bring you pain, but it is worth watching, so that one can see how far we have come as a nation, yet how far we still have to go. I grew up during the time of mandatory military service, and sometimes say that I entered the military as a WASP but departed the military as an American.. I discovered that the saying "Our Strength is in Our Diversity" is not just a saying--It's a fact. God bless our Nation of Immigrants, not only our recent arrivals, but those of us whose ancestors arrived here seeking a better life, as well as those of us whose ancestors were brought here against their will. May we all continue to work together to make our Beloved Nation truly a land of equal opportunity "...With Liberty and Justice for All."

Es gibt einige sehr gute Filme über die großen, vor allem im Süden der USA stattfindenden Rassenunruhen der 60er Jahre. Unvergessen bleibt dabei Roger Cormans bereits 1962 (also mitten des Zeitgeschehens) inszenierter "Weißer Terrror", wo gerade die Aufhebung der Rassentrennung zu schwerwiegenden Konflikten in dem Moment führt, als die schwarzen Kids in Richtung Highschool marschieren. Nicht zu vergessen den großen oscarprämierten "Mississippi Burning" von Alan Parker, der sich mit der Aufklärung des Mordes an drei Bürgerrechltern durch zwei sehr unterschiedliche FBI Männer (gespielt von Willem Dafoe und Gene Hackman) beschäftigt. Die Ermittlungen werden vom offen zur Schau getragenen Rassismus und dem mächtigen Ku-Klux-Klan behindert.
Nun kann man auch das Geschichtsdrama von Ava DuVernay aus dem Jahr 2014 zu diesen wichtigen Filmen über Rassenhass zählen. Das Thema erscheint auch aktueller denn je zu sein. Der Film ist somit auch einer der wenigen Filme, die sich anhand von tatsächlich stattfindenden Eregnissen eindrücklich mit dem Rassismus im eigenen Land auseinandersetzt - man mochte es kaum glauben: Die freiheitliche Nation, die nicht mal 20 Jahre vorher Europa vom Rassenwahn der Nazis befreite, ist Mitte der 60er Jahre diese demokratisch orientierte Nation mitten in ihrem eigenen Rassenthema und die Diskriminierung der schwarzen Bevölkerung erinnert an unser eigenes dunkles Kapitel. Dabei wurden zwar im liberaleren Washington durchaus schon durch Gesetze formuliert und verabschiedet, die gleiche Rechte für alle forderten - doch deren Verwirklichung scheiterte vor Ort.
"Selma" ist kein Biopic über den großen Bürgerrechtler Martin Luther King Jr., sondern die Handlung steigt ein mit dem grausamen Attentat auf die 16th Street Baptist Street, bei dem vier kleine dunkelhäutige Mädchen ums Leben kommen. Dann Szenenwechsel nach Stockholm, wo Martin Luther King kurze Zeit später für sein Engagement als Bürgerrechtler den Friedensnobelpreis in den Händen hält. Nächste Szene zeigt die engagierte Annie Lee Cooper (Oprah Winfrey), die sich beherzt und mutig in das Wählerregister von Alabama entragen lassen will, doch vom lokalen Beamten in demütigender Weise abgelehnt wird. Dieses Recht hatte so ein Behördenmitarbeiter, die kurzentschlosssen die Lesefähigkeit und Staatsbürgerkunde mit absurd schweren Fragen überprüfen konnten - alles darauf abgezielt, den Anwärter durchfallen zu lassen.
Mit dem Anführer Martin Luther King Jr. (David Oyelowo), dessen Frau (Carmen Ejogo) immer mehr Angst hat um ihren prominenten Mann, versuchen im Frühling 1965 mutige Demonstranten einen friedlichen Marsch im Bundesstaat Alambama von Selma nach Montgomery zu laufen. Dieser Marsch soll dazu dienen, dass ein uneingeschränktes Wahlrecht für alle vorhanden sein soll. Präsident Lyndon B. Johnson (Tom Wilkinson) schwankt - einerseits sieht er die Notwendigkeit solcher Gleichstellungen, andererseits schielt er auf das Beibehalten seiner Macht, denn die konservativen politischen Kräfte im Lande arbeiten mit sehr großem Druck. Auch George Wallace (Tim Roth), demokratischer Gouverneur von Alambama, torpediert die Bestrebungen der schwarzen Bevölkerung. Diese Märsche von Selma nach Montgomery werden blutig durch örtliche Sicherheitskräfte und State Trooper niedergeschlagen - der erste Marsch endet bereits gleich nach Verlassen der Stadt an der Edmund Pettus Bridge. Am 7. März 1965 wird das amerikanische Fernsehen unterbrochen - es läuft gerade Stanley Kramers "Judgement of Nuremberg" - und der geschockte Zuschauer bekommt live plötzlich die Bilder der Gewalt als aktuelle Nachrichten serviert. Durch diese Publicity entsteht aber eine Wendepunkt in der öffentlichen Meinung...
"Selma" ist ein sehr gut inszenierter Film, der die Fakten präzise schildert und zum wichtigen Zeitdokument wird. Dabei brilliert auch Hauptdarsteller David Oyelowo, der sich sehr zurückhält und so zum Glück nicht dieser überlebensgroße Held zeigt, sondern einen engagierten Menschen, der Stärken und Schwächen zeigt.
Bei der Oscarwahl 2015 gabs nur zwei Nominierungen, einmal für den besten Film. Als bester Filmsong konnte "Glory" von Common, John Legend sogar den Sieg davontragen.
Angesichts der erstaunlichen Tatsache, dass sich bislang kein großes Filmstudio mit irgendeinem Aspekt des Lebens von Dr. King oder der Bürgerrechtsbewegung beschäftigt hat, fühlte die junge Filmemacherin Ava DuVernay, dass es schon lange einen dringenden Bedarf daran gab, dieses wichtige Kapitel in der US-Geschichte zu erzählen. Keine Frage, es ist ihr hier ein sehr wichtiger Film gelungen.
