This was a fun read. Very light with a lot of amusing dialogue.
Marcus and Lily are very likable. They meet when Marcus' daughter Rose is brought to him when her mother dies. Marcus hires Lily to be her governess.
Lily and her friends run an employment agency and she jumps at the chance to provide help to the duke's household. Since they have no one qualified - Lily takes the job.
Lily fell on hard times after her father died and the only employment she was able to get was as the bookkeeper of a brothel. Because of this, she believes she is ruined and has no hope of marriage.
Marcus has been enjoying being a bachelor and had no desire to marry. But with the arrival of Rose, he has decided to clean up his act and find a proper wife and mother for his daughter. He enlists Lily to help him become a proper gentleman.
The story is cute - there are no real villains, no real conflict and there is quite a bit of very funny inner dialogue.
It is a perfect beach read or to use as "book sorbet" between heavier, more angst laden books. I would recommend this book and am looking forward to the rest of the series.

If you are looking for a quick historical romance with a happy ending, this book fits the bill. The author slowly peels away the layers of the characters, revealing the hidden wounds beneath but at times I felt disconnected to the characters, as if the writer was just skimming the surface of their true feelings. The gist of the story, Marcus was neglected as a youth, his parents doting on his older brother which allowed him to enjoy the sins of drink, gambling and debauchery. Suddenly he finds himself a titled duke without the proper instructions on how to act. Enter Rose, his bastard daughter who was conceived during his short liaison with a prostitute. She is dropped off at his doorstep after the death of her mother and suddenly Marcus grows a heart, connecting with the abandoned child as he once was. In need of a governess he hires Lily, who comes to him with secrets of her own. The storyline plays out as expected. Marcus and Lily are drawn to each other, but class differences prevent them from acting upon them. Lily is the only one who was able to connect with Rose, so of course Marcus hires her on sight without references. With rumors flying about the ton, both of the new handsome eligible duke and the young ward he has taken in, Marcus must now make an attempt to prove to society, that he is not only respectful, but in the market for a suitable wife to raise Rose. Who better to instruct him on the finer arts of society than his new governess, however, their attraction to each other becomes a distraction. When Lily’s past threatens both Marcus and Rose’s reputation, she of course must do what is best for all and leave. Will true love win out over the ton’s strict rules? This story was cute, with enough sexual tension to keep you interested without the author using it to carry the storyline. It’s a good beach day or rainy night snuggled next to a fire type of read.

I find it difficult to rate this book. I laughed and giggled through most of it, however it is fluff compared to the other romances I have been reading. 3.5 would be more accurate. It was an enjoyable read.
Each chapter begins with a rule for how to be a duke. Marcus is a newly minted, unprepared duke who does not not want to misuse his title. Lily is the determined woman from an unfortunate background that he hires to be a governess to 4 year old Rose. Rose is Marcus's illegitimate daughter whose mama has died.
Most of the humor comes from the one sided conversations that are going on inside Marcus and Lily's heads. Even their spoken conversations are humorous. These characters remind me of Robert and Minnie in Courtney Milan's The Duchess War.
Read it when you need a light hearted pick-me-up.

I'll admit, I got a major kick out of Marcus being enraptured by his two flowers. It took him a while to figure things out, but it was a sweet, well-earned while. And, really, for a former second son who was a hell-raiser and troublemaker, he did pretty well reaching the point he needed to be at.
Pretty well, indeed.
So. Lily and Marcus. And Rose. Because I like her. Their romance is of the slow and sweet variety. Which I actually liked. I mean, usually I'm all for insta-lust and everything, but the slow build up to the inevitable clandestine grope worked for me. This time, at least. And Lily's bravery in telling Marcus what she wanted after that first grope made me cheer. Girl power in a corset, man!
I would be remiss if I didn't mention how much I adored how Marcus tried to do right by Rose. Big, strong men who are devoted to their families make me grin. Even if he didn't exactly start out right with her, he made up for it. I appreciate that.

I'm partial to this period of historical romance novels and Ms Frampton has written a good story. Lily is impoverished due to her father's misuse of the estate and she's been forced to make her own living. She's running an employment agency with her friends and seeing that women who are without means are gainfully employed. When the new Duke is presented with his daughter after her mother's death he hires Lily as the governess. It's quite funny at times with the dialogue between the three main characters. Rose may be a 4 year old girl but she possesses her father's wit. It's saddening that illegitimate children were treated so poorly. It was expected that they be sent away and positions obtained for their future even though they were the issue of a Duke or other titled men. This story could have ended quite differently due to the social restrictions placed on all members of society. But it seems that a Duke can actually do whatever he wants to.

I enjoyed this book. I felt empathy for the Duke who tries to change his life for the better in order to give his illegitimate daughter a good home. The governess also tries to do the right thing by the Duke and his daughter. Unfortunately this conflicts with her love for them both. I like the ending, although I'm not quite sure it's believable. One other problem with the book is that it seems to run out of steam about three-quarters of the way through and the author tends to repeat herself somewhat. I think it would be a better book with some judicious editing. Still, it's very enjoyable.

I'm in two minds about this book. Basic premise: Marcus has unexpectedly inherited his dukedom just six months previously, and after a night of carousing with friends is (also unexpectedly) presented with Rose, his four-year-old natural daughter. Rose's mother has just died, so Marcus takes her in and therefore must hire a governess. Enter Lily.
I did like the characters, especially the duke, Marcus. His back story made perfect sense and paved the way for him to develop. Lily's was a little more complicated, and in terms of the historical period in which the novel is set (1840), rather more shocking. Rose is nicely drawn for the most part but seems remarkably unfazed by her mother's death and being suddenly dumped on a set of people she doesn't even know.
The writing is quite light and witty in tone, although I'm not really sure if the little guides to correct behaviour at the beginning of each chapter are necessary. And where do they come from? Marcus's mind? Someone else's mind?
There's mention of "cookies" at one point, but I guess I can live with that since the rest of the time the word "biscuit" is used. However I really could have done without the masturbation scene.
My biggest gripe is that none of the problems they face is really resolved by the story ending. The problems are still there, it just seems as though the characters have decided to deal with them by ignoring them.

I tried and tried but I could not figure out the purpose of the book nor what message the author was trying to send, as her characters, while I felt some sympathy for them, I could not figure out if I was supposed to like them or cheer for them or anything. Disappointing read.

I really liked the witty banter between the duke and his governess, but sometimes he just seemed a bit stupid. Like he never had to think before in his whole life. Which doesn't make sense. And sometimes the protagonists' musings about their feelings and problems was a bit repetitive.
