Asger Jorn & Per Kirkeby

Asger Jorn and Per Kirkeby are two of Denmark’s most significant postwar artists. By focusing on watercolour and drawing, The Nordic Watercolour Museum brings forward an experimental dimension of their artistic practices. The selection includes works from key periods in each artist’s career: from Jorn’s experimental and spontaneous visual language of the 1940s to Kirkeby’s works of the 1980s and 1990s. (Concurrently, selections from the museum’s collection are on display)

What's on?

Guided tours

Welcome to join our guided tours (in Swedish), held every Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday at 2 pm. The tours are included in the admission fee, and no pre-booking is required. On Saturday, 15 August, the tour will be interpreted in Swedish Sign Language.

Guided audio experience

The audio guide has been given a new format for summer 2026. Rather than simply conveying the information found in the wall texts and exhibition leaflet, we have created a guide that invites you to experience the art of Asger Jorn and Per Kirkeby in new ways. Upcoming exhibition / 27 sep 2026–11 apr 2027

Britta Marakatt-Labba

In the autumn/winter of 2026–2027, The Nordic Watercolour Museum will have the unique opportunity to present the first ever exhibition of Britta Marakatt-Labba’s works on paper. Marakatt-Labba has become internationally renowned for her extraordinary embroideries. Her drawings and watercolours, however, are almost entirely unknown. These images, delicate yet powerful, are thematically very close to the embroideries – the same motifs often recur, but in a new and more intimate form. Her narratives connect the underworld, the upper world and the ground we walk on, in accordance with the worldview of Sámi mythology. Her motifs revolve around Sámi life in close relationship with nature, but also around colonialism, loss and resistance – about the face of racism, human greed and the lost lands once grazed by the animals. Exhibition opening on Saturday 26 September at 2 pm.

The Collection

Unlike many other museums, The Nordic Watercolour Museum does not have a permanent exhibition of works from its collection. Instead, we continuously showcase selections from it. By working solely with temporary exhibitions, we are able to present a larger portion of our collection over time. The collection is a living and vital part of the museum's activities, and you can discover more about it here on our website.

Vatten Restaurang & Kafé

The restaurant is located in the same building as the museum, where you can enjoy food inspired by the sea, prepared in a modern Nordic style. The museum and the restaurant operate as separate entities but are united by a shared passion for the unique atmosphere of the location.
