I don't know about the movie, but the book is a work of absolute genius that has nothing to do with disability.

I followed, and about the 'R' word. But, I am beginning to get frustrated. If 'we' can mobilize about Hollywood, where is the mobilization to get a good president elected. What do you think?Jennifer Bartletthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15931457867406555423noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6282426883246883237.post-84580472779221909442008-09-30T17:54:00.000-07:002008-09-30T17:54:00.000-07:00H Jennifer,I think people were not really referrin...H Jennifer,

I think people were not really referring to disability as anything in particular. I think this group started with the intention of having speakers on the issue of disability and poetics but in the case of this discussion, as Dodie said, we "were trying to do too much at once" and it ended up being about Bhanu's notions of healing as she is a body worker/a person who has seen a lot of family trauma due to ethnic discplacement and partly about my ideas of a poetics as it relates to the idiosyncracies of personal physiology. I think actually the "trauma" came from the audience's gloss on things and as for why my discussion made people uncomfortable, well I wasn't aware it did and would like to know why as well.

I think while the talk was advertised as part of a disability discussion, it ended up not being that, it took its own form though it touched on some aspects of disability because they relate to my writing.Amber DiPietrahttps://www.blogger.com/profile/01007718658816253722noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6282426883246883237.post-13295493969913655882008-09-30T09:46:00.000-07:002008-09-30T09:46:00.000-07:00Hi Amber,I just started reading about the discussi...Hi Amber,

I just started reading about the discussion. I see a couple of things that worry me, but may be mistranslating. Are people referring to the disabled body as a wounded body? Are people using the word 'trama' to refer to the disabled body? Why did your piece make people 'uncomfortable?' Why do people have a hard time accepting people with disabilities as an identity i.e. race or gender rather than a weakness?Jennifer Bartletthttps://www.blogger.com/profile/15931457867406555423noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6282426883246883237.post-54293694658873827982008-06-01T22:31:00.000-07:002008-06-01T22:31:00.000-07:00yay, flordicana!yay, flordicana!Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6282426883246883237.post-44848784032974193812008-04-13T07:10:00.000-07:002008-04-13T07:10:00.000-07:00what a great article... i know you always spoke s...what a great article... i know you always spoke so highly of him, and described him very well, but it was neat to read that article and esp about his work in tibet.... you are definitely very lucky to have him : )Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6282426883246883237.post-27040419913809114412008-02-10T19:51:00.000-08:002008-02-10T19:51:00.000-08:00Did you see that one of the people in the stories ...Did you see that one of the people in the stories this week was named Teresa Walsh?? Perhaps everything is gradually coalescing towards 2012 as so many have predicted. Many more people wanting to go more slowly, to breathe (inspire), to savour the flavour of life in its day by day manifestations. To live and be aware of living.

Have good times and thanks for The Blink

GinAnonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6282426883246883237.post-7571320187795651632007-11-06T09:19:00.000-08:002007-11-06T09:19:00.000-08:00Hmm--I read that article you quote from and loved ...Hmm--I read that article you quote from and loved it, but I'm not even sure how crazy I am about her poetry I am after reading the work the article links to. So I'm rethinking getting the book, but her ideas and the way she executes them are just so compelling to me. I saw her read/perform at CCAC in her breathy voice throwing string around and loved that. So I was thinking about all this in terms of my stupid novel, where there is now an artist who makes Vicuna-style art referencing North America from hanks of the abandoned weaves that litter the streets of Oakland. Here is a quote:

She fixed on an illustration of one of Vicuña’s pecularios, a stone next to a string tied like a quipu, and thought that although we did not have this particular tradition in our country, what she imagined were piles and piles of quipu in a roofless fourteenth-century ruin of an Incan cubicle, we did have these weave pieces in the streets. Cast from women’s heads, trampled by rain and traffic, knotty and full of garbage. We did not have the same word for “to weave” and “to breathe” like in the Quechua language, but in Oakland you might have to differentiate whether you are weaving a cloth or having a weave put in or torn out of your hair, and there’s beauty there.

Ha. Ha. Ha. Upon closer consideration, I think the thing about Quechua isn't true and that I just made it up.Melanie Westerberghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/02269541906201960018noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6282426883246883237.post-85632137981155729252007-11-05T08:06:00.000-08:002007-11-05T08:06:00.000-08:00Do you have that Precarious book?
